The most prestigious award for conceptual design in hospitality, the Radical Innovation In Hospitality Award has received more than seventy projects worldwide this year and commented about Grand Cancun -a multifunctional offshore eco-platform with luxury resort facilities- among the best for “standing out” and “mind blowing” concept. The truth is, all ideas were brilliant. But the reason of this particular post, is that very few have been conceived from the core with the intention of saving the planet. Please visit the website of the Award and delight yourselves with the best in conceptual design in architecture. ( Click on the logo below ).
Project Grand Cancun was also awarded the First Prize in the National Architecture Awards of Dominican Republic, year 2012. His designer, who we already know in this blog for his BICIMETRO-BICITAXI, is Arch. Richard Moreta Castillo, who now has ventured to try and solve various coastal problems afflicting the city of Cancun while envisioning a jaw-dropping resort.
Planned to become the jewel of the Caribbean and celebrate the 50th foundation anniversary of the city, Grand Cancun will be a mega-building, an offshore city standing on stilts where hotels, commercial centres, convention centres, cinemas and loads more will provide the ultimate experience in hospitality…
… while cleaning the seas, being totally self sufficient, having zero-carbon-footprint, and providing drinking water and energy for the city from renewable resources!
Grand Cancun will provide part of the city`s needs with clean, local renewable energy. Solar panels will cover most of surfaces, including see-through photovoltaic polymers on the dome. Every residential block on the tower will have vertical wind turbines and solar panels. Underwater there are systems of tidal and wave energy collectors. All rain water will be collected and reused. Wastewater is not wasted! It will be purified and reused for gardens. A large inverse-osmosis desalination plant will provide drinking water for all the users of the complex and some for the city.
But the most interesting thing is that it will clean the seas. The shape of the building, its private beach and waterfront, and the coast will direct water right through waste collectors for floating solids and hydrocarbons. The water will be also nourished and purified to increase marine life. Above the water everything is planned to care about the environment, and about motivating people to share the responsibility.
If this wouldn’t be enough, there is also a fantastic underwater city, where leisure and research combines in a breathtaking feature!
When this new green architecture gets built, it will set new standards around the globe about what is possible and ideal as a resort, and will change the way we see our holidays forever. The best of the idea of Arch Richard Moreta, is that eventually his building will be replicated in such a scale that the return to pristine clean beaches will be there for our grand children to enjoy.

Thanks for your blog article, but there are some mistakes on it:
1. there are no wind turbines stuck upside down in the water, but proper efficient, proven tidal, wave and currents energy harvesting systems. Among them: turbines, retro-pallets, wave pistons and floating helixes.
2. The desalination system is a MEGA, not MINI.
